How Do I Reduce Glare On My Laptop?

If you’re a person who uses a laptop all day long, eye strain and headaches might be a common thing for you. But, as you may know, these things might be caused by your laptop screen’s glare.

Screen glare can be due to high screen brightness or sunlight reflection. Whatever the cause, screen glare is not good for your eyes because it causes dry eyes, leading to further eye problems.

To avoid said problems, we can take certain steps that I am going to outline below.

1. Adjust Your Laptop’s Brightness

As I previously mentioned, high brightness is the most common culprit of screen glare. If you use your laptops for hours at a time, at maximum brightness, you might feel a burning sensation in your eyes at the end of the day.

As noted, this can lead to serious eye problems. That’s why it’s best to adjust the brightness and contrast to a minimum level.

You’ll find the brightness button at the bottom right corner of your screen. You can also adjust the brightness via Settings and the keyboard. Dim your brightness level and reduce the chances of having eye problems.

2. Choose Your Location Wisely

People love sunshine because, well, it’s sunshine. However, when it comes to screen glare, good as sunshine may be, it can lead to glare, leading to eye problems.

How?

Well, if sunlight is hitting your screen, you will probably have to increase your screen’s brightness which we just recommended against.

So, how do you avoid this problem?

Well, it might be obvious, but if it’s not: choose your location wisely.

Choose your laptop location wisely

Choose a place where there is no direct sunlight. If the room you use has several windows, try lowering your shades or curtains (if you have any). That way, sunlight will not fall directly on your laptop.

In a similar vein, if you work in an area with fluorescent light, it will cause reflection on your screen. In this case, place your laptop away from the light source so that it does not cause a reflection on your screen.

3. Get A Laptop Hood

Try this option if you can’t get rid of the screen glare using the methods described above. Laptop hoods (also known as Laptop Sunshades) are the best way to get rid of glare. They come with Velcro strips, inside and outside, that you use to attach the hood to the laptop.

Laptop hoods are relatively inexpensive (from $19 to $95) and can easily be found on Amazon. Also, as you might expect, there are several DIY videos and other instructions online if you want to try your hand at making your own laptop hood.

If there is one drawback about laptop hoods, it’s their size. They’re not necessarily huge, but they do require a bit more space, so be sure to take measurements if you’re considering purchasing a laptop hood.

4. Cover Up With Anti-glare Films

If you don’t want to cover up your laptop with a laptop hood, you can try this option instead.  There are many anti-glare filters on the market; some of the best ones can reduce screen glare up to 95 percent. You can easily find them on Amazon, or, again, you can make your own if you’re feeling thrifty or creative.

5. Wear Anti-glare Glasses

If you don’t want to cover your laptop screen, you can cover up your eyes with anti-glare lenses. Lenses with polarized and color coatings are used to minimize or remove glare on screens. Also, some color-coated lenses block harmful blue lights, which can cause harm to your eyes.

Personally, I’m not too fond of anti-glare glasses. I only used them for a short while because they seemed to work best when my screen’s brightness was at its lowest, which, to my mind, sort of defeated the purpose of using them. But then again, using these glasses doesn’t mean you should have your laptop screen brightness at max level.

6. Get Your Laptop Screen Cleaned

Clean Your Laptop Regularly

Dust particles on your laptop screen are one of the reasons that glare occurs, so if you want to avoid glare or keep it to a minimum, you should clean your laptop regularly. Remember, turn your laptop off before you do any cleaning, and be aware of where you’re spraying stuff! Also, remember to use something soft and avoid rubbing your laptop’s screen (be gentle!).

Final Words

So, that’s it. I hope you can use some of these tips to reduce or get rid of laptop screen glare. It’s not fun to work while you have a headache or strained and/or dry eyes. Also, it’s important to take care of our eyes’ health and avoid problems where we can. Thanks for reading!
